MUSTANG – Sharon-Mutual got points from four athletes to finish third in the Class A state track meet held here Friday and Saturday.

The Trojans finished off their big performance by winning the concluding 1600 meter relay on Saturday in a time of 3:33.79 to edge Okeene. Beaver won the team title with 66 points, Okeene had 60 and Sharon-Mutual 54.

Dale Ramsey, Mac Griffith, Jase Day and Jory Custar ran on the relay squad, which was undefeated this season. All four earned All-State honors. The coach is Brad Shryock.

“They ran their best time of the year under pretty adverse conditions,” said Shryock of his relay squad. “Right as the race started it began to sprinkle and the wind was gusting up to 30 miles per hour all day long and they were still able to run their best time.

“This is our first ever relay win (at state). Back in the 80s we had a second place and since I’ve been coaching a couple of fourth places.”

Three of the four are juniors with Ramsey the lone senior.

Ironically with Beaver finishing third in the relay, Sharon-Mutual’s victory prevented Okeene from winning its third state title of the school year. Okeene needed to beat Beaver by two places to win the championship.

Custar also added an individual state title with a time of 2:00.66 in the 800 meter run. Custar’s season best was 1:57.99, which was one of the tops in the state in all classes this year.

Before Custar, Derek Lamle was the last individual champion for Sharon-Mutual as he won the 200 and 400 about three years ago, Shryock said.

Ramsey was state runnerup in the 400 meters with a 52.28 and Griffith placed in three events, second in the high jump by clearing 6-0, third in the 110 hurdles in 16.23 and fifth in the 300 hurdles in 42.44.

Sharon-Mutual’s team also received the distinguished academic achievement award with a grade point average of 3.66.

Shryock said the Trojans expect to be a major factor again this next year with the returnees and some younger athletes from a a junior high team that won the Covington meet this spring.

“We have high expectations for next year’s team,” Shryock said. “There’s a lot of excitement about the track program right now and we’re looking for bigger and better things next year even.”

Other area athletes also did well at state.

On the girls side, Allison Fields placed in the long jump and 400 meter run for Mooreland and Jana Nickelson also placed in the 300 hurdles.

Buffalo’s Dayonna Smith as second in the high jump.

For the boys, Mooreland’s Tanner Thrash was third in the high jump and Braydin Farrow sixth in the long jump. Jake Harris was second in the pole vault for Laverne and Scott Lujan was second in the shot put. Buffalo’s Mike McLain won the high jump and Freedom’s Juan Fraire won the discus.
