Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s application for membership in NCAA Division II will not move forward this year.
Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president, was informed Tuesday by the NCAA Division II membership committee that Northwestern will not be granted candidacy status for the 2011-12 academic year.
“The decision is disappointing, however, we knew going into this process that at least 16 schools were vying for only a limited number of slots,” said Cunningham. “The NCAA received a number of strong applications, including ours, but the limited number of openings made it an extremely competitive process.”
Cunningham said the decision will not deter the school from its goal of moving to the NCAA.
“The factors that led us to seek NCAA membership are still in place and we intend to enhance our application and reapply at the next available opportunity,” she said.
Despite the setback, officials with the Great American Conference continue to support their decision to offer the institution provisional membership.
"We're disappointed that Northwestern was not accepted into the NCAA Division II membership process this cycle, but the Great American Conference stands behind the school,” said Will Prewett, commissioner. “The GAC is very confident that this will only be a delay in Northwestern’s eventual admission to the conference and Division II. We will do all that we can to aid in that process."
