A punishing ground game lifted the Boomers to a 12-6 win over Weatherford in the season opener at Boomer Stadium Thursday.
Woodward piled up 241 yards rushing and controlled the ball most of the game.
“Basically the second half our offensive line took over,” said head coach Aaron Marlatt. “We had the football almost the whole second half.”
Tyler Gonser’s nine-yard run gave the Boomers a 6-0 lead in the first half. Corbitt Kline scored on a one-yard sneak in the third period for a 12-0 advantage. Weatherford scored with 6:30 left in the game, but the Boomers had possession of the ball the rest of the way.
David Dennison finished with 104 yards rushing for the Boomers, Austin Ketcherside had 67 and Gonser 50.
Woodward continues its homestand next Thursday against Clinton.
