MOORELAND - The Woodward Middle School football team traveled to Mooreland Monday for two games. The eighth grade “A” and “B” teams swept the Bearcats.

The Boomer “B” team won 24-12, while the “A” team poured it on with a 32-6 win.

In the “B” game, Woodward broke the ice in the second quarter with a five-yard score from Tanner Ward while Seth Heckart added the two point conversion.

Mooreland answered with a score on a one-yard run, but, the PAT failed leaving the Boomers up 8-6.

In the third quarter, Woodward’s Ward added his second touchdown on a 15-yard jaunt, plus he got the call for the extra point in which he made giving the Boomers a 16-6 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Ward was at it again as he found paydirt for the third time in the game, this time on a three-yard rumble and again he added the extra two points to give the Boomers their 24 points.

Late in the game, Mooreland added a 62-yard run for a score, but could not convert on the extra point and the final score was 24-12.

“They played pretty well,” said coach Darrell Jones. “I think they all had fun out there and we saw a lot of good things from the team.”

In the “A” game Woodward again got the early lead with a five yard run from Tanner Eagan. The extra point came via a pass from Casey Covalt to Mason Semmel giving the Boomers an 8-0 lead.

But on Mooreland’s first play from scrimmage, the Bearcats busted a 58-yard play for six, but failed to tie the game on the point after attempt and Woodward remained on top 8-6.

“They never should have got the touchdown, we did a poor job of tackling on that play,” said Jones.

In the second quarter the Boomer defense logged a score as Jake Gilreath intercepted a pass and ran it back 15 yards for a touchdown. Eagan collected the two point conversion giving the Boomers a 16-6 lead.

In the second half, Woodward’s offensive explosion continued as did the stingy play of its defense.

The Boomers added six more points in the third as Eagan scored again this time from five yards out. The point after was also good as Covalt found Heckart on a pass completion.

Mooreland gave the Boomers two more points later in the third as the Bearcats were attempting to punt from their own end zone but had the ball sail over the punter’s head and out of the end zone on the snap for the safety, putting Woodward up 26-6.

In the fourth quarter the Boomer defense got back into the action Semmel picked off a pass and sprinted 30-plus yards to the house for the score. The PAT failed but Woodward had the 32-6 victory.

The Boomers amassed 178 yards in total offense while the defense gave up 172 yards, but kept Bearcats out of the end zone, except for the one play.

“We are real proud of the offensive line. They are real tough, they are big and strong and they move well,” Jones said.

Jones added the Boomers did have too many turnovers and he will address the situation at practice.

“But overall we were happy with the performance of the kids,” said Jones.

Woodward had 35 carries for 160 yards and threw for 18 yards on three completions with no interceptions.

The “B” squad will be in action again today as the Boomers will host Enid following the seventh grade “B” game which will kick off at 4 p.m.

The ninth grade team will play the late game following the eighth grade game.
