NEWCASTLE - Two of the state's top 10 teams in Class 4A clash here tonight in District 4A-1 football action.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. for the first meeting ever in football between No. 5 Newcastle and the sixth-ranked Woodward Boomers.
Both teams come into the District 4A-1 game with plenty of momentum. Newcastle is 4-0 and defeated Cache in the district opener last week. The Boomers are coming off a 22-7 victory over Elgin, also the district opener. Woodward has won three straight since an opening night loss to Kingfisher.
Newcastle was a playoff team in 3A last year and the Racers have kept that success going in the transition to Class 4A.
Casey Freeman directs a balanced offense that averages 365 yards per game. He has thrown for 758 yards and eight touchdowns with just two interceptions. Gavin Garner and Ben Persall have been his top two targets but 14 different players have caught passes.
Zach Bergt anchors the running game with 308 yards and six touchdowns.
The Boomer defense has limited two of its last three opponents to just one touchdown and a week ago allowed just 161 yards to Elgin.
The Boomers were able to get pressure on the Elgin quarterback last week and that will be a key again against the veteran Racers.
Woodward's offense is built around the running game with several people getting an opportunity to carry the ball. Caleb Reddin and Carson Hodgden have been consistently strong and quarterbacks Kade Marlatt and Lane Reazin are big play threats every time they take off.
The Boomers are solid and experienced up front.
Newcastle's defense has put up good numbers all the way around, allowing under 10 points a game for the year.
The other 4A-1 matchups tonight have top-ranked Anadarko hosting a struggling Clinton team, Elk City at Elgin and Cache at Weatherford, newly ranked in the top 10.
The area schedule tonight includes:
Class A: Mooreland at Burns Flat-Dill City, Beaver at Fairview, Thomas at Texhoma, Sayre at Hooker.
Class B: Seiling at Pioneer, Kremlin-Hillsdale at Turpin, Laverne at Pond Creek-Hunter, Canton at Merritt.
Class C: Buffalo at Sharon-Mutual, Cherokee at Shattuck, Waynoka at Balko.
Class A games are starting at 7 p.m. and the Class B and C games kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
Key matchup in Class B has Laverne going for its 32nd consecutive victory against the team the Tigers beat in the last two state championship games. Pond Creek-Hunter is also off to an undefeated start.
In Class C, top-ranked defending state champion Cherokee faces its toughest test of the season in a 3-0 Shattuck team. Cherokee won when the teams met in the state semifinals last season.
In Class A, the Beaver-Fairview game looks like the top matchup. Beaver is 3-1 with its only loss to powerful Hollis. Fairview is coming off a big road win at Mooreland.
