A Woodward man has been charged in Woodward County District Court with one count of cruelty to animals.
Johnie Dale Steele was charged Monday and is free on a $10,000 bond.
Steele was arrested Friday by Woodward police after Cpl. Alan Fletcher responded to a residence in the 900 block of Lakeridge in reference to an allegation of animal cruelty, said Woodward Police Det. Lt. Darren Navratil.
On arrival Fletcher found one deceased adult dog that had no shade, food or water available to it, Navratil said.
According to an affidavit filed by Fletcher, a male adult dog was on a tie out and had a dog house and shade tree available for shade.
A few puppies were running loose and the others were in a kennel, according to the affidavit.
Fletcher said the only source of water available was a child’s wading pool which contained muddy water. The other puppies were confined to a kennel which had four empty bowls, Fletcher said in the affidavit.
The deceased adult dog was the mother of the puppies.
In the affidavit, Fletcher said Steele asked to call his girlfriend and the officer said he overheard Steele telling her the dog was dead and that he did not know how it happened because he fed her and gave her water this (Friday) morning.
The other dogs were taken by Animal Control and are currently being monitored.
The investigation into the situation is ongoing.
