The Woodward Travelers 18-under baseball team completed the season's opening weeked with a 5-0 record after beating the Liberal, Kan. Rattlers 12-4 Sunday at Fuller Park.

On Friday and Saturday the Travelers beat both Kingfisher and the Oklahoma City Broncos.

The 17-under team ended the weekend 3-2 by defeating Liberal 12-9 in the early game Sunday. Woodward lost twice to Kingfisher and beat the Oklahoma City Broncos twice.

On Sunday, the 18-year-old club broke a 4-4 tie with a pair of runs in the third inning using a walk, single and a couple of errors.

It stayed 6-4 until the fifth when Colton Hunter doubled and scored on Brendan Griton's grounder.

The Travelers tacked on five more in the sixth with Dylan Turenr singling home two runs , Hunter brining in one with a double and Girton hitting a two-run single.

Cole Fletcher, the seond of three Traveler pitchers, got the win. Dawson Howard started and worked into the third before Fletcher relieved. Parker Ward pitched the seventh inning.

Woodward got three runs in the first inning as Ty Goss walked and Christopher Goldston tripled. Girton had an RBI single in the inning.

Goss singled and scored on a three-base error in the second to make it 4-0.

Liberal scored all four runs in the third inning.

In the first game Sunday, Woodward's 17-under team scored five runs in the first inning and never trailed, but had trouble pulling away from the Rattlers.

Drake Kerr doubled and scored on a Cade Stephenson single to get things going in the first inning. A couple of walks and errors turned it into a big inning. David Garcia had an RBI ground out.

Each team scored in the fourth, the Liberal got three in the fifth. Woodward answered with four with Stephenson, Kerr and Hunter Halderman getting hits.

Liberal came up with three in the sixth and the Travelers go tow back in the bottom half on a two-run double by Haydon Whetstone.

Liberal added wo more in the seventh for the 12-9 final.

Colton McCracken and Kade Watkins threw for Woodward.


Woodward's 18-under team opened the year with a 6-4 win over Kingfisher. Turner homered and drove in two runs and was also the winning pitcher.

In a 14-3 win over the Broncos, Caden Church drove in four runs and Colton Clinesmitih and Girton two each. Jackson McCormick got the win.

On Saturday, the Travelers beat Kingfisher 11-3. Turner drove in three runs and Goss two.

Then, Woodward beat the Broncos 11-3. Hunter had three RBI, Bowles two and Goss two. An 8-run fifth inning was key for Woodward. Ward added three hits. Ward had a team-leading eight hits over the weekend.

The 17-under team lost a 2-0 pitchers duel against Kingfisher on Saturday, then defeated the Broncos 10-5.
