A local man died from injuries he received in a two-vehicle wreck just before 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Cory N. Smith, 22, of Woodward, died enroute to the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, said the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Smith was being taken by medi-flight from Woodward Regional Hospital and was pronounced dead at the Watonga Hospital, the OHP report said.

Smith suffered leg and internal injuries in the crash 12 miles southeast of Woodward on U. S. Highway 270, the OHP said.

According to the report, a Freightliner towing a flatbed trailer had stopped in the eastbound lane of Highway 270 and was attempting to turn north on to State Highway 50. Smith, according to the report, was in a pickup going southeast and failed to stop for the truck, striking the flatbed trailer in the rear.

Smith was pinned for 49 minutes before being extricated by the Woodward Fire Department, the report said.

He was taken to the Woodward Regional Hospital and picked up there by medi-flight.

The report said Smith was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the truck, Nathan Childs of Ypsilanti, Mich., was not injured.

The roadway was closed for one and a half hours, the OHP said.

Trooper Johnny Chaffin of the OHP’s Shattuck Detachment investigated the wreck. He was assisted by the Woodward County Sheriff’s Office, Woodward EMS, the Woodward Fire Department and the Sharon-Mutual Fire Department. In addition, workers from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation who were working in the area assisted with traffic control.
