The Pregnancy Center will be host of its 12th golf tournament Monday at Boiling Springs Golf Course.
Titled the “2009 Pregnancy Center Golf Tournament,” the event is a four-man scramble for anyone who wants to participate.
Tee time is 8 a.m., and golfers are encouraged to register by 7:30 a.m. so the tournament can begin on schedule.
To sign up, call (580) 254-2805 or call the golf course at (580) 256-1206.
A noon meal will be provided.
Belva Mabra, executive director of the Pregnancy Center, said proceeds from the tournament will go to the center.
“It’s not a ton of money, but it brings in $4,000 to $5,000, and that’s nice,” Mabra said of the tournament. “The community merchants sponsor the holes and give us door prizes, so we don’t have to put out any money for the (event).”
The golf course, which is 18 holes, has a hole near the club house that will net a $20,000 prize if someone hits it as a hole in one, she said.
Proceeds from the tournament will pay for diapers, formula, wipes, baby bottles, crib sheets, baby seats, cribs and pregnancy tests, Mabra said. These items are then distributed to area mothers or potentially expectant-mothers, she said.
In order to receive the items, the mothers must earn points and take part in parenting classes, she said.
“It’s really been busy since the economy dipped a little bit,” Mabra said. “We’ve had a lot more clients come in.”
The Pregnancy Center has been in Woodward for 13 years,” she said, noting it offers free pregnancy tests so that referrals to Sooner Care insurance may be given.
It also offers lay counseling.
“We call it lay counseling, because we’re not licensed counselors,” Mabra said. “It’s helping people through hard times in their lives.”
In addition to supplies for babies and pregnancy tests, the center provides clothing donated by the public.
“We get a lot of donated clothes that have to be washed, so volunteers do that as well,” she said. “We offer help to the entire Northwestern Oklahoma area, and with a shortage of O.B. doctors, the sooner a pregnancy test can be conducted, the sooner (recipients) can get on Sooner Care.”
“The parenting classes are popular,” she said. “Men come in as well. We like it when we can help both men and women.”
