The Woodward Chamber of Commerce is currently taking nominations for the 2013 Citizen of the Year award.
Chamber President C.J. Montgomery said the award recognizes "that particular person that stands out" in his or her service to the community.
"It's a way to honor that person that's given so much to Woodward," Montgomery said, adding "which can be difficult because there's a tremendous number of people in the community deserving of Citizen of the Year."
Montgomery explained the process that goes into selecting Woodward's Citizen of the Year winner.
"People fill out a real standard nomination form that they complete and return and that goes to an anonymous selection committee made of Woodward city leaders and former Citizen of Year winners that ultimately make the decision," he said.
In making their selection, Montgomery said the committee members evaluate each Citizen of the Year candidate based on the following criteria:
• volunteer service to the Woodward community and area,
• accomplishments in city and area betterment,
• civic leadership, and
• personal accomplishments in business, family, church, and school.
"Once again, there are so many people in the community who excel in all of those areas, it just boils down to the one that stands out," Montgomery said.
The nomination and selection process for the Citizen of the Year award is kept secret until the winner is announced at the Chamber's annual banquet, so that the winner is surprised each year.
Montgomery said this means it is up to other citizens to nominate those persons who they feel deserve special recognition for involvement in the local community.
The deadline to nominate a candidate for Citizen of the Year is Dec. 28.

STUDENT CITIZEN OF THE YEAR ALSO BEING SELECTED
On a related note, the Chamber's Education Committee is currently in the process of selecting the Woodward Student Citizen of the Year.
"The Student Citizen of the Year interview process is currently going on. I believe we have close to 10 nominations," Montgomery said.
The student award recognizes a Woodward High School junior who is "a well-rounded student," he said.
"For Student of the Year, the selection committee takes into account things like school activities, community service, academics, church involvement," Montgomery said.
The announcement of the Student Citizen of the Year, just as with the Citizen of the Year, will take place at the Woodward Chamber of Commerce's Annual Banquet in January.
Montgomery went on to name some of the perks associated with the awards.
"Students of the Year receive a $500 scholarship and the Citizen of Year always gets to flip the big switch in the fall to open Crystal Christmas," he said.
