SEILING--The folks at Daugherty Farms in Seiling would like to invite everyone to join them on Saturday, Sept. 1 for the annual Daugherty Draft Horse and Mule Field Day.

The horses and mules will begin to arrive on Friday evening and will start their demonstrations at the Flying W Rodeo grounds on Saturday morning around 10 a.m.

According to event organizer Larry Daugherty, there will be several horse teams on hand to demonstrate how farming was done 100 years ago.

"We will have plowing and disking demonstrations along with corn grinding with the horses," Daugherty said.

The horse teams will also participate in log pulling contests, he said.

"There will also be wagon rides for those who just want to go for a ride," he said.

Along with the horse demonstrations, there will be a Dutch oven cooking contest, homemade ice cream making contest, a craft show, as well as demonstrations from a rope maker and a blacksmith, he said.

"In the Dutch oven contest, contestants must make a main dish and a dessert from scratch," he said.

There is no deadline or entry fee for the cooking or ice cream contests, but those wanting to participate are asked to let Daugherty know in advance.

Those who take the time to create all the delicious dishes will be rewarded with cash prizes, Daugherty said.

"We charge a small fee to those who sample the food and ice cream and that money is divided up between all the contestants," he said.

Besides sampling the Dutch oven and homemade ice cream creations, visitors to the field day can also grab some grub from an old fashioned chuck wagon.

"We will have a chuck wagon there with stew, cinnamon rolls and coffee all day," Daugherty said.
