Those curious about Ellis County history and genealogy may want to attend the annual meeting of the Ellis County Historical Society Saturday in Shattuck.
It is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. at the Schultz Store, on the grounds of the Windmill Park Museum.
“Our meeting is open to anyone with an interest in history (or) genealogy,” said Linda Fox, a member of the historical society.
Discussion subjects at the meeting will include fundraising and a newspaper article about Ellis County history currently being drafted, Fox said.
She noted that fundraising is necessary in part because there are costs involved for maintaining the historical society's website at www.usgennet.org/usa/ok/county/ellis.
The Ellis County Historical Society was formed in 1974 because the members recognized that there was significant county history that was going to be lost if steps weren’t taken to preserve it, Fox said.
Currently the society has 7 members, she said, noting the number is small because of the ability to research genealogical topics on the Internet.
Among the information compiled by the historical society is a list of Ellis County burial and death records, which are available for inspection at the libraries in Shattuck and Woodward and at the Ellis County Courthouse in Arnett, Fox said.
