A local motorcycle group is planning a benefit poker run this weekend to raise money for a Woodward firefighter undergoing treatment for cancer.

The run is organized by the local Chapter 4 of the Oklahoma Red Knights, which is a motorcycle club composed exclusively of firefighters, both active and retired.

Jamie Green, president of the Red Knights Chapter 4, said that the club is all about helping fellow firefighters and burn victims.

According to Green, Woodward firefighter Steve Smith was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2006 and learned in 2009 the cancer had spread to his liver.  Smith continues to work 2 jobs, including full time as a Woodward firefighter, while receiving chemotherapy treatments in Enid along with visits to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

"Every penny from the poker run will go to Steve," Green said. "This is being done to help him with medical and travel expenses."

There is a per-person entry fee that will be charged for those participating in the poker run, including those who just go along for the ride and aren't competing for the best poker hand.

"The poker run will start at 8 a.m. at the Woodward Fire Department and we will travel to all the fire departments in Woodward County and we will also be going to the Vici fire department because of their donation," Green said.

The poker run will end up at Crystal Beach pavilion where the riders will enjoy lunch, he said.

"We are having an auction at the pavilion after the ride and donations will be accepted during the entire run," Green said.

Auction items are still being collected, he said.

Green said they are hoping for about 50 to 60 riders or more, depending on how many of the other Oklahoma Red Knight Chapters participate.

There will be door prizes and prizes awarded for the riders who get the highest and lowest poker hands, according to Green.

"We have gotten several gift certificates from local restaurants and items from The Bloom for door prizes," Green said.
