James Clyde “Jack” Lynes was born to James and Opal Lynes near Vici, Okla., on March 27, 1935. He departed this life on Sept. 13, 2005 while in the Edmond Medical Center in Edmond, Okla.

Jack was the second of five children born to his parents. His early years were spent beside his dad learning the art of blacksmithing and farming. At the age of seven he traded a pig for his first horse and has never been without a horse or saddle since. Jack graduated from Vici High School. After high school he moved north of Woodward, Okla., where he hired on as a cowboy for the Nighswonger Ranch. Jack then met a young lady named Lottie Ashlock while she was working at a cafe in Buffalo, Okla. A few months later on Nov. 5, 1955 they were married. They became farmers together and had some of the best sets of team horses in the country. They were blessed with three children; Lelia Ann, Chelcie Jerome and James Allen. The highlight of each day for the children was to help Jack drive his team of horses to the barn after a long hard day of work. Jack and Lottie were married for 49 years. He wanted so much to make it to their 50th wedding anniversary.

Jack enjoyed many things but his family was the most important. They were the pride of his life. He made sure they always came first. He always had a glass of tea ready for the thirsty and a story or two to be told. When his son Chelcie showed no interest in riding broncs, Jack set up a barrel in the yard. At times there would be as many as 20 boys trying to stay on for eight seconds.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents James and Opal Lynes, a son Chelcie Lynes, two father-in-laws, John Ashlock and Bernard Prophet, a mother-in-law, Della Prophet, a niece, Connie Drew, a nephew, Michael Levings, two brother-in-laws, Don Drew and John Sharnhorst and a sister-in-law Lillie Drew.

Jack left a legacy to mourn his passing, his wife Lottie of the home near Sharon, Okla.; a daughter, Lelia and husband Dennis of Vici, Okla.; a son Allen Lynes and Linda Gillispie of Sharon, Okla.; grandchildren, Scott, Ada, Chrystal, Kody, Bert, Jenita and Becky; great-grandchildren Jolie, Briahna, David and Jaydon; three sisters, Vena Bookstore and husband Bill of Freedom, Okla., Orpha Evans and husband Lewis of Woodward, Okla., and Loreta Sharnhorst of Wichita, Kan.; a brother, Carl Lynes and his wife Pat of Vici, Okla.; a very special cousin, which he considered a brother, Wayland Lynes of Sallisaw, Okla.; sister-in-laws LaUna Levings and husband Ivan of Alva, Okla., and Carley Waugh and husband Duane of Cherokee, Okla.; a brother-in-law Sonny Ashlock and wife Wanda of Protection, Kan.; special friends Frank and Mary Jane Evans; other family members and many, many friends. Jack’s family was at his bedside when he passed from this life.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005 at Vassar Cemetery under the direction of Shaw Funeral Home, Vici, Okla.
