Father Joe Arledge of St. Peters Catholic Church is planning a pilgrimage to Greece and Turkey in September 2019. The group is proposed to leave the U.S.A. on Sept. 10 and return on the 20th with an optional Celestyal Cruise until Sept. 23.
“We hope to have at least 20 people,” said Arledge. He said the purpose of the trip is “to familiarize ourselves with the footsteps of St. Paul, and to grow closer to our Blessed Savior Jesus Christ.”
Arledge said the trip is not limited to parishioners only. Anyone is welcome. Children 12 to 17 are also welcome to accompany parents.
Pilgrims will stay two nights in Istanbul, Turkey which is the location of the old Byzantine capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. It was Constantine’s headquarters and the center of early Roman Christianity.
Then they will travel to Greece and stay a night in Kavala, where the Apostle Paul landed on his first voyage to Europe.
After an excursion to Philippi, next night will be in Thessaloniki, which is the second largest city in Greece and where Paul visited on his second missionary journey inspiring two letters included in the Bible as First and Second Thessalonians.
One night will be spent in Kalambaka, home of a medieval cathedral, and a night in the archaeologically rich site of Delphi after a visiting the Bysantine museums of Meteora.
The last three nights will be in Athens, capital and largest city of Greece. Athens is touted as one of the world’s oldest cities with a history recorded over 3,400 years. While there, the group will visit Corinth.
There will also be an optional three day cruise to the islands of Mykonos, Patmos, Crete and Santorini with a visit to Ephesus and the House of Mary.
Reservations can be made with a $450 deposit now with the final payment of the $3500 round trip package due by June 6, 2019. The package includes round trip air fair, taxes and fees, daily breakfast and dinner, and hotel reservations. Not included are travel insurance, lunch, snacks and drinks, tips and Turkey Visa.
