A former champion won the Woodward County Senior Spelling Bee on Wednesday afternoon.

Seventh grader Amanda Covalt, of Woodward Middle School South, won the bee by spelling vulnerable correctly. As a fifth grader Covalt also won the county bee.

Julia Benbrook, an eighth grader at Woodward Middle School South, finished in second. Sixth grader Gabriel Gayton, of Woodward Middle School North, was third. Khaden Runyan, a seventh grader from Mooreland, came in fourth.

A total of 13 students from Mooreland Middle School, Woodward Middle School North and South and Woodard Christian Academy competed in the spelling bee.

Covalt moves on to the regional spelling bee in Amarillo in March. Two years ago she took home $1,000 for her performance at regionals.

Besides Covalt, junior spelling bee champion Ashton Shore, a fifth grader from Woodward Middle School North, will make the trip to Amarillo. Shore has been invited to attend a dinner and the regional spelling bee, but will not take part in the competition.
