Boomer basketball season tips off

Woodward, Okla. — Basketball season opens in Woodward tonight as the Boomers host Piedmont.

Action starts a little earlier than normal with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m. at Boomer Fieldhouse and the boys game following.

Piedmont is moving into Class 5A this season and both teams are ranked in the top 20 in preseason polls.

The Piedmont girls are ranked 7th and the boys are 14th. Woodward’s girls are unranked and the boys are 20th in Class 4A.

This is also opening night for Piedmont.

Last season both Boomer teams lost to the Wildcats in Piedmont.

Woodward’s girls return 2 starters from last year’s area tournament team - seniors Haylee Bates and Mercedeez Bell.

The Boomer boys have 2 full-time starters back in juniors Taylan Iliff and Kaleb Roach along with senior Braton Cloyd who started part-time.

The Boomers will play again later this week, traveling to Weatherford on Friday for the Western Conference opener.

The area schedule tonight is also a busy one.

Games include Alva at Blackwell, Goodwell at Balko, Beaver at Guymon, Canton at Fort Supply, Cheyenne at Hammon, Fairview at Okeene, Higgins at Freedom and Waynoka at Cimmaron.

All are girls-boys doubleheaders with the girls tipping off at 6:30 p.m.

In addition, the Leedey girls travel to Gage for a 6:30 p.m. start. Gage doesn’t have a boys team this year.

On Friday, the area schedule has Oklahoma Bible Academy at Alva, Arnett at Canton, Balko at Yarbrough, Buffalo at Leedey, Fargo at Cheyenne, Fairview at Thomas, Sharon-Mutual girls at Gage, Hammon at Vici, Mooreland at Okeene and Waynoka at Medford.

The Woodward 9th grade girls basketball team will start its season this week in the Western Heights Tournament.

Woodward opens play at 3:20 p.m. on Thursday against El Reno.

Other teams in the tournament include host Western Heights, Newcastle, Mustang, Chickasha, Capitol Hill and Deer Creek.

Also this week, the Woodward 7th and 8th grade teams will travel to Elk City on Thursday for 4 games.

On the college side, Northwestern will play its first-ever games in the Great American Conference on Thursday, hosting Southern Arkansas. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m. and the men take the floor at 7:30 p.m.
