4-H shooting sports series opens on Oct. 27

Woodward, Okla. — It's almost time for the annual 2012-2013 Northwest Oklahoma 4-H Winter Shooting Sports Series, consisting of 4 competitions.

Woodward County OSU Extension Agent-4-H/Youth Development Melanie Lynes-Matt said the first shoot, which use air rifles, air pistols and recurve, genesis and compound archery, is at 9 a.m. Oct. 27 at the Woodward County Fairgrounds.

The shooting moves to the Woods County Fairgrounds in Alva for Nov. 10; the Noble County Fairgrounds in Perry, Dec. 1; and then to Watonga and the Blaine County Fairgrounds on Dec. 15. Start time will be 9 a.m. at all sites.

"This is the largest project in 4-H," she said. "I'm not sure on the count of past participation, but it's been offered each of the 12 years I've been here."

Age divisions, as of Jan. 1, 2012, are juniors, 9 to 11; intermediate, 12 to 13; and senior, 14 to 18.

Competitors must be shooting in at least at 2 of the events to qualify for "Winter Series" awards, Lynes-Matt said.

Participants are limited to 2 shooting disciplines at each session.

Woodward County 4-H Shooting Sports has equipment, ammunition and arrows for each participant, except compound bows, she said.

There are also 3 recreational shooting events schedule that do not count in the point standings.

One will be an air gun-only shoot at the Payne County Fairgrounds in Stillwater on Dec. 8; the Red Hills Classic Archery-only Shoot in Watonga at the Fairgrounds. Jan 5; and back in Stillwater Jan. 12 for the Oklahoma 4-H Indoor Archery Shoot. All start at 9 a.m.

"We're right on the edge of hunting season, so this is being offered at this time to teach youth responsible firearm/archery use," said Lynes-Matt.
