Woodward, Okla. —
Woodward heads north and west for its second contest of the young football season today.
The Boomers, coming off a dominating 47-7 win over El Reno a week ago, will face the Garden City, Kan. Buffaloes in a 7 p.m. contest at Buffalo Stadium.
Garden City is 0-1 after a 32-27 loss at Bixby a week ago.
The Boomers are looking to snap a 3-game losing skid to Garden City. Woodward's last win over the Kansas Class 6A school came in 2001 at Boomer Stadium when the Boomers started the season 3-0.
Since the series was resumed in 2010, Garden City has won all 3 matchups, though 2 of the games were battles, including last year's 18-7 Buffalo win.
This year, both teams are loaded with experienced players.
The Boomers returned all but a few players from last year's playoff team while Garden City will start several seniors on both sides of the ball.
Last week, the Boomers were close to perfect on offense, scoring on 7 straight possessions from the late first quarter through the third period.
Kale Hixon ran for 2 touchdowns and passed for 3 more, including a pair to sophomore Kade Marlatt. Hixon completed 13 of 15 passes for 167 yards in the game. Woodward got offensive production from just about every position.
The Boomers also pitched a shutout on defense with El Reno's only points coming on a game-opening kickoff return.
Garden City's defense was gashed for over 500 yards by a talented Bixby squad.
The Buffaloes, though have good speed at several positions. Sophomore Nalen Ricones and senior Dozie Ekweariri were the leading tacklers against Bixby.
The Boomer defense, which forced 5 turnovers last week, will face a test from Garden City quarterback Grayson Tempel who rushed for 212 yards and 4 touchdowns against Bixby while also throwing for another 183 yards.
The Buffaloes, though, turned the ball over 4 times in the game, including a pair of interceptions by Tempel, who threw the ball 36 times.
Garden City will start an offensive front where the smallest lineman is 230 pounds.
Notes: Barring a surprise this will be the end of the Woodward-Garden City series for at least a couple of years. Currently, the Boomers non-conference opponents for 2014-2015 are Kingfisher, El Reno and Northwest Classen. Garden City's Buffalo Stadium is just 2 years old as it was built as part a new high school. If you are going to the game, here are directions: The new Garden City High School and stadium is located on the Northeast side of town, off of the 156/83/50/400 loop. Go North on 156/83/50/400 to E Mary Street and turn left. Then turn right into Buffalo Way and stay right and continue to the North side of the school. Parking for the stadium is on the West side of the field. The Boomer quarterback club will meet at noon at Big Dan's Steakhouse and the Boomers will leave for Garden City at 1:15 p.m. Woodward's home opener is next week against Northwest Classen.
