Woodward, Okla. —
A thrilling finish lifted the Boomers to the championship of the Woodward Invitational Softball Tournament Saturday night.
Hillary Hurst's RBI single scored Kameron Pope with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Boomers defeated Alva 4-3 in the championship game on the WHS field.
Alva had tied the game in the top of the 7th on an RBI single by Darian Caruthers.
But Goldbug errors in the bottom half of the inning put the Boomers in position to win.
Pope reached on a leadoff error and went to third on another error that put Jessica Burkhart on base. With runners on second and third, Hurst delivered a blast down the third base line for the game-winning hit.
The Boomers went 5-0 over the weekend and take a 7-1 record into a Monday doubleheader at Elk City where they face Cache at 5:30 p.m. and the Elkettes at 7 p.m.
Alva, behind a 2-run third inning and the pitching of Natalie Seevers, took a 2-0 leading the bottom of the sixth inning.
But the Boomer offense came alive,
Burkhart led off with a double and scored on a single by Hurst. McKenzie Hunter singled. The Boomers second run scored on a throwing error and Heidi McEwen singled home the go-ahead run for a 3-2 lead.
Ally Riley gave Alva the early advantage doubling home 2 runs in the third inning.
Hurst was the winning pitcher striking out six.
Earlier on Saturday, the Boomers defeated Alva 4-2 on the strength of a 3-run fourth inning.
Lindsey Custer and Devre Newby drove in runs in the fourth inning and the Boomers also took advantage of a pair of errors.
Hurst struck out 4 and gave up 5 hits in the win.
The Boomers opened the day with a 4-2 win over Vici. Adyson Clark threw 5 innings for the win with Hurst pitching the sixth.
