Boomer softball team picks up win

Woodward, Okla. — The Boomers evened their season record at 12-12 with a solid 9-3 win over Clinton Monday, Sept. 9 at the high school softball field.

A 5-run fifth inning broke open a close game as the Boomers reversed a loss to the Tornadoes earlier this season.

Ahead just 4-3 going into the fifth inning, the Boomers got hits from Jessica Burkhart, McKenzie Hunter, Hillary Hurst, Heidi McEwan and Devre Newby to break the game open.

Newby had a particularly big night with three hits and five runs-batted-in.

Clinton scored in the first inning, but the Boomers got three in the second, then added a run in the fourth frame after the Tornadoes had tied the game with a  pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

Newby singled home Courtney Barnett with the go-ahead run. Barnett walked to start the inning and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Custer.

The Boomers had 11 hits in the game.

Hurst pitched five innings for the win and Adyson Clark worked the final two frames.

The Boomers host Elk City on Tuesday, Sept. 10, then go to Vici on Thursday, Sept. 12.
