Boomers travel to Elk City for district tournament

Woodward News

Woodward, Okla. — ELK CITY – The Boomers join the basketball playoff party tonight as they travel to the Pioneer Center for the Class 4A district matchup with Elk City.

Tipoff time for the girls game is 6:30 p.m. with the boys at approximately 8 p.m.

Everyone will advance on to regional play next week, in either the winners' or elimination bracket against the winner/loser of games between John Marshall and Bridge Creek. The first round of the regional will be at John Marshall in Oklahoma City with games then moving to Weatherford for the final 2 days.

Due to the snowstorm earlier this week that canceled the regular season finale, the Boomers and Elks have met just once, back in December and Elk City won both games, the girls in overtime and the boys at the final buzzer.

Woodward's girls take a 5-16 record into the rematch, though the Boomers have played pretty well in several of those losses.

Elk City is 13-8 and unranked, but has been on the edge of the top 20 a couple of times. The Elkettes have wins over Cache and Elgin this season.

Erin Hutchinson is typically Elk City’s most potent weapon on offense.

The Boomers are a young team overall with just 2 seniors - Haylee Bates and Mercedeez Bell.

On the boys side, both teams have hovered around the .500 mark all season.

Elk City is 11-10 and has won 3 of its last 4 games with the only loss to top 10-ranked Cache. One of those wins was over a good Harrah club.

Luke Lewallen is the Elks leading scorer but Colby Love is the guy to watch late as he has at least 2 game-winning shots at the buzzer this year.

The Boomers, 10-11, are led by junior guard Taylan Iliff who averages 17 points a game. Ty Richey chips in 12 points a night and Kaleb Roach 9. Zach Rowland and Trevor Collier both average around 5 points a game.

Richey and Roach are the leading rebounders.

The Boomers won have won 4 of their last 6 games including victories over Washington and Newcastle.
