Boomers look to keep momentum going

Woodward, Okla. — After breaking a 12-game losing streak to Elk City with a 24-10 victory last year, the Boomers look to make it 2 straight over the Elks tonight.

Kickoff is 7;30 p.m. at Big Elk Stadium.

Woodward comes into the game off a 38-28 victory over Cache while the Elks have lost 5 straight since the district season started. The Elks are just 1-6 overall and coming off a 62-27 loss to Clinton.

Woodward, 4-4 overall, is 3-2 in district play and looking to pretty much lock up a berth in the Class 4A playoffs. The Boomers are 4-0 on the road this year.

Offensively, the Boomers are coming off one of their best outings of the season. Woodward ran for over 300 yards against Cache with Xavier Vo, Ky Merriman, Dakota Taylor and Kyler Ferguson all having success. Ferguson scored twice and Vo once. Both of Jake Hughes' completions went for touchdowns to Kaleb Roach.

Elk City has struggled on the defensive side much of the year, allowing over 38 points a game. The Elks have been especially vulnerable against the run.

On the defensive side, the Boomers will be looking to eliminate the type of big plays Cache was able to hit.

Elk City's offense has shown some signs of explosiveness and played Weatherford tough recently, leading early before losing 33-17. Elias Wiseman and Jarvey Jackson are 2 key figures in the Elk offense. Earlier in the year the Elks struggled to run the ball.

The Elks have been slowed some by injuries to key players this year including losing receiver Luke Lewallen to a broken arm.

In District 4A-1 the top game tonight probably has unbeaten Anadarko at Weatherford. The Warriors are putting a 23-game winning streak on the line. Weatherford has won 4 straight since dropping its district opener to Clinton.

Also, Elgin is at Piedmont in a game the host team needs to win to stay in the playoff picture.

The area schedule features several games of interest.

In District C-1, unbeaten Forgan visits Balko, Shattuck goes to Boise City, Sharon-Mutual travels to Goodwell and Buffalo is at Tyrone. Waynoka hosts DCLA in a non-district contest.

In District B-1, top-ranked Laverne is home against Seiling and Canton travels to Pond Creek-Hunter.

In District A-1, Mooreland hosts Turpin, Okeene makes the trek to Texhoma, Fairview goes to Beaver and the Hooker Bulldogs are at OBA.

In District 2A-1, Alva hosts Dibble.

The big matchup in C-1 has Forgan at Balko. The Bulldogs are 7-0 and looking to wrap up the district championship and 2 home playoff games that go with it. Forgan has outscored opponents by a margin of 352-44. Balko, though, isn't a pushover. The Bison are 6-2 on the season and played Sharon-Mutual tough on the road a week ago.

Sharon-Mutual goes to Goodwell looking for its 7th straight win. Goodwell is 0-8 and has allowed 386 points this season while scoring just 38.

The Buffalo-Tyrone matchup is basically for the 4th playoff spot in the district. Buffalo missed the playoffs by a game last year and would like to reverse that this season.

Shattuck is looking for its second win in a row at Boise City.

Laverne is 8-0 and averaging 57 points a game with its offense. Seiling can score as well, averaging over 30 points a game, but the Wildcats have sometimes struggled on defense.

Mooreland needs a win to assure a winning season and will be favored against a Turpin squad that is 0-8 and has scored just 15 points the entire season. It will be Senior Night at Enterline Field.

Okeene will try and hand Texhoma its first loss of the season and in the process make the district race a little more interesting. Texhoma, though, has been dominant all season and is ranked in the top 5 in the state.

Game time everywhere is 7:30 p.m.
