Minors close festival with 2 wins

Woodward, Okla. — After an 0-3 start, the Traveler Minors finished off their season opening baseball festival with a pair of wins at Fuller Park.

Zach Johnson tossed a 3-hit complete game shutout on Monday morning as the Travelers routed Liberal, Kan. 13-0 in the fifth place bracket roud game.

Johnson struck out 9 as the Travelers cruised past a team that had beaten them earlier in the festival.

On Sunday afternoon, Woodward got its first win of the season blasting Enid 11-3 by scoring 9 runs in the opening 2 innings.

After getting 3 runs in the first inning, the Travelers added 6 in the second, taking advantage of a series of walks and errors. They also got hits from Dakota Woods and Kyler Ferguson.

A two-run single by Chandler Salinas in the bottom of the fifth gave the Minors the run-rule, 11-3.

Robbie Burris was the winning pitcher.

Woodward travels to face Arnett on Tuesday then will play in a tournament at Clinton starting on Thursday.

On Monday, the Traveler Majors improved to 3-2 with a 12-5 rout of the Oklahoma City Bulls in the Midwest City Holiday Tournament.

Thomas Sander started and was the winning pitcher for the Majors. Dalton Shalberg and Clayton Stoup threw in relief.

Offensively, Zach Fowler had 3 hits and drove in 3 runs and Matt Martin had 2 hits. Harley Herring and Leno Ramirez each drove in a pair of runs.

On Sunday, the Travelers split a pair of games, losing 8-7 to Oklahoma City Sandlot, then edging Putnam North 3-1.

The Sandlot setback was a tough one as the Travelers couldn't hold a 7-3 lead in the seventh inning. Sandlot scored 5 run-in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Stoup took the loss in relief of Clayton Brewster.

Korey Floyd and 2 hits and drove in 2 runs to pace the attack and Francisco Alvarez also drove in a pair of runs.

Woodward had stretched its lead to 7-3 with 3 runs in the top of the 7th.

In the Putnam City North game, the Travelers came up with 2 runs in the top of the 7th for the 3-1 victory.

Winning pitcher  Fowler also had the big hit, a 2-run double to score Herring and Ramirez. Herring led off the inning with a single and Ramirez was hit by a pitch.

Woodard's other run came in the second when Bryson Lierle walked and scored on a single by Herring.

Fowler pitched a complete game, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 12, He walked 5. He allowed just one baserunner over the final 2 innings.

The Travelers are home tonight for a 6 p.m., doubleheader against the Enid Majors.

They will also host the Southwest Shockers in a doubleheader on Thursday before holding the 5-team Woodward Festival Friday through Sunday.

The Travelers, Shockers, Bartlesville, Real Tree and Oklahoma Outlaws are the 5 teams in the round-robin festival.
