Travelers open season in Midwest City

Woodward, Okla. — MIDWEST CITY - The Traveler Majors opened their baseball season on a successful note Friday night at Rose State College.

Woodward defeated long-time rival Enid 6-3 in the opening round of the Midwest City Memorial Day Tournament.

Chase Wilson pitched 5 solid innings to pick up the win. Giles Fox worked the 6th inning and Clayton Stoup came on in the 7th for his first save of the year.

Trailing 3-2 after 3 innings, The Travelers took the lead for good in the fourth as Matt Martin and Bryson Lierle started the inning with hits. Harley Herring reached on a fielder's choice that forced Martin. An error then opened the door for both runs.

In the fifth, the Travelers added some insurance.

Garret Collins walked and Francisco Alvarez doubled. Collins scored on a balk and Alvarez crossed when Matt Martin hit a one-out single.

Enid scored all 3 of its runs in the third inning. In the fifth Enid got runners to second and third with 2 outs before Wilson got a strikeout to end the frame.

Enid didn't threaten in the final 2 innings.

On Saturday morning, the Travelers dropped to 1-1 in the tournament, losing a 6-5 battle to the Southwest Shockers

A three-run top of the 7th inning gave the Shockers a 6-4 lead and Woodward could only answer with one run in the bottom half.

The Travelers had taken a 4-3 lead with 3 runs in the sixth inning.

Stoup, the third Traveler pitcher, took the loss. Alvarez pitched four innings and Leno Ramirez worked the fifth and sixth frames.

Herring and Hunter Schellhardt had RBI doubles in the sixth inning and Zach Fowler delivered a sacrifice fly.

In the 7th, Alvarez singled and scored on Herring's two-out double to make it 6-5 before a strikeout ended the game.
