Elks hosting Hoop Shoot event for kids

Woodward, Okla. — The Woodward Elks Lodge will be holding its annual Elks Hoop Shoot contest this weekend.

The event be held at Kids Inc., with check-in at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14 followed by the contest beginning at 9 a.m.

“It (Elks Hoop Shoot) is basically a free throw contest,” said Dr. David Peck, head trustee of the Elks Lodge.

Peck said this weekend’s hoop shoot is the local contest with students from Buffalo, Fargo, Fort Supply, Leedey, Mooreland, Vici and Woodward participating. The Elks Lodge contacts the schools and the school picks the students who participate in the contest.

Peck said there are 3 age groups for boys and girls in contest, 8- to 9-years-old, 10- to 11-years-old and 12- to 13-years-old.

“We usually have close to 80 kids (participating),” Peck said.

He said the kids from each age group will line up and shoot 10 free throws and then come back and shoot 15 more free throws. The shots will be averaged together to determine a winner.

Peck said the contest should be over around 11 a.m.

“After the contest the Elks Lodge will provide a hot dog meal and a trophy presentation,” he said.

Peck said 1st and 2nd place trophies will be awarded to students in each age category.

In addition, Peck said the 1st place winner from each age category will advance to the district contest on Feb 4. in Kingfisher.

“Second place is an alternate in case first place can’t make it (to district),” he said.

Depending on how the student does at district, they can advance to state then regionals and ultimately nationals.

“We have a couple (of students) win state and some go to nationals," Peck said, noting “We had one who went to nationals and it was in Massachusetts."
