Youth hunting program looking for volunteers

Woodward, Okla. — A volunteer dinner for the Oklahoma Youth Hunting program will be held at 6:30 p.m. on June 26 at K-Bob's in Woodward.

Andy Keim, one of the organizers, said the event is free.

"We are looking for volunteers for hunting guides," Keim said, noting they are also looking for landowners to volunteer areas to hunt.

The Oklahoma Youth Hunting Program takes kids from non-hunting homes and teaches them to hunt. Kids are taken on deer hunts during the youth hunting season the last part of October.

"We want to develop new hunters in Oklahoma, especially among kids who don't have the opportunity, who don't have a father or uncle to take them hunting," Keim said. "We pay for everything.

"We need some good volunteers for guides, cooks, general hep around camp."

The youth hunting camp, is planned the last week in October and is a 3-day camp held at private ranches all over the state.

"We usually take about 20 (kids) from this area," Keim said. "We hunt doe, we don't compete with trophy hunters and safety is the number one priority.

"This is our seventh year and probably about 400 kids have taken part. Last year there were 53 and our goal this year is to take 100 on the deer hunt."

Keim said all volunteers need to be able to do is pass a background check.
