Boomers to open playoffs on road

Woodward, Okla. — Woodward will spend this season’s playoff journey on the road.

Assignments released on Thursday by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association have the Boomers going to Elk City for 4A District action the weekend of Feb. 15-16.

It will be a quick rematch as the Boomers host the Elks on Feb. 12 for Woodward’s Senior Night.

From there, win or lose, the Boomer teams will play the first round of regionals at John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City The regional will then go to Weatherford and the area tournament is at Yukon.

The seeded teams in Area 1 for boys are second-ranked Douglass and No. 8 Tulsa McLain. Other top 20 teams include No. 9 Bethany, No. v14 John Marshall and No. 18 Mount Saint Mary.

Girls seeded teams are third-ranked Weatherford and No. 5 Mount Saint Mary. Heritage Hall (11), Bethany (14) and Bridge Creek (17) are the other top 20 teams.

The pairings hold out the possibility of a boys contest between Douglass and Woodward in the regional finals. The last time the teams met was in the 2011 state quarterfinals when the eventual state champion Trojans escaped with a 2-point victory in a epic game.

In Class 2A, the Mooreland Bearcats will also be on the road throughout the playoffs.

Mooreland opens post-season play with a long road trip west to face the Hooker Bulldogs.

From there, everything is in the Enid area with the regional at Chisholm and the area at the Great Plains Exposition Center.

Mooreland’s girls go into the playoffs ranked 14th. The seeded teams in the area are Alva (5) and Ripley (4).
