Woodward, Okla. —
A pair of veteran boys teams are set to tip off the basketball season tonight at Boomer Fieldhouse.
Both the Woodward Boomers and Alva Goldbugs feature senior-laden rosters and both are ranked in the top 20 of their respective classes.
Game time is approximately 8 p.m. The girls game opens the varsity action at 6:30 p.m. JV games start at 4 p.m.
Woodward’s boys start the year ranked 19th in Class 4A while Alva is ranked 12th in Class 3A on ossaarankings.com. The teams split a year ago with each winning on its home court.
The Boomers sport a deep, experienced roster with 8 seniors expected to contribute including Taylan Iliff and Kaleb Roach, who are starting for the third season. Other seniors include Micah Key, Kale Hixon, Jason Alexander, Slade Roach, Austin Ludwyck and Logan Pope.
Also back are returning starters Ty Richey, a junior, and sophomore Garrett Owen.
Alva has a veteran group as well led by players like Ty Hopper, Riley Hess, Lane Madsen and Cade Pfleider.
The Goldbugs also have a deep squad.
On the girls side, the Boomers will face a major test from the Goldbugs, who are ranked second in Class 3A behind Adair.
The Boomers are unranked and return 3 starters - Amanda Covalt, Shelbi Smithton and Hillary Hurst - from last year’s regional finals team.
The Boomers are overall quite young with only 2 seniors - Covalt and Kaity Shoaf on the roster.
This will also be the debut as Woodward’s coach for Kinzie Didier, an assistant last season under Pat Hawkins, who retired at the end of last year.
Tonight’s area schedule includes Higgins, Texas at Arnett, Balko at Goodwell, Fort Supply at Canton, Sharon-Mutual at Mooreland, Thomas at Seiling, Cimarron at Waynoka, Hooker at Forgan, Tyrone at Turpin and Guymon at Beaver.
