Boomers handle Wildcats, 28-7

Woodward, Okla. — PIEDMONT – The Boomers used a punishing running game to defeat Piedmont 28-7 Friday in the District 4A-1 opener for both teams.

In addition to going 1-0 in district action, the Boomers extended their road winning streak to 5 games and are 2-2 on the season. Piedmont is also 2-2, but 0-1 in the district.

Ky Merriman scored a pair of touchdowns and Dakota Taylor one in the second half as the Boomers controlled the action.

Woodward finished with 205 yards on the ground while holding Piedmont to just 33 rushing yards.

The Boomers led 7-0 in the first half on the strength of a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jake Hughes to Kaleb Roach.

That was all the scoring before intermission.

In the second half, the Boomers opened up a 14-0 lead as Ky Merriman scored on a 3-yard run and Jesus Munoz, as he did after every touchdown, kicked the extra point.

Piedmont countered with a score, but the Boomers opened it up to 21-7 in the fourth period on a 4-yard run by Merriman.

Late in the game, the Boomers added another touchdown on a 4-yard run by Taylor.

In addition to the 205 yards rushing, the Boomers added another 57 yard passing as Hughes hit 5 of 10 attempts.

The Boomers didn’t commit a turnover.

Defensively, the Boomers also picked off 3 Piedmont passes.

Woodward will host Weatherford next week on White Out Night at Boomer Stadium.

In other District 4A-1 action on Friday, Clinton downed Weatherford 17-7, Elgin routed Elk City 35-0 and Anadarko buried Cache 47-0.
