WAGONER - in a back and forth game, unbeaten Wagoner edged the Woodward Boomers 28-21 at Odom Field Friday in the Class 4A football quarterfinals.
Lawrence Evitt's 21-yard touchdown run with around 6 minutes remaining provided the winning score for the Bulldogs.
The Boomers were unable to answer that touchdown and saw their season end at 8-4. The state quarterfinal appearance was the Boomers second in three years. The eight wins were the most by a Boomer team since the 1996 club went 8-5.
Wagoner struck first as Evitt broke a 64-yard touchdown run just a couple of minutes into the game.
Kyler Ferguson tied it with a 2-yard run early in the second period.
Wagoner went up 14-7 on a 4-yard run by Roman Rodriguez and kick by Tanner Rolen.
Again the Boomers came back as Kale Hixon hit Kaleb Roach with a 7-yard touchdown pass just 7 seconds before halftime. Jason Alexander's kick evened the game 14-14 at the break.
Wagoner again scored first in the third quarter on a 5-yard by Evitt.
The Boomers evened things up later in the quarter on Dakota Taylor's 10-yard run.
Wagoner, 12-0, will face Anadarko, also 12-0 in the semifinals next week.
