Wagoner edges Boomers 28-21 in state quarterfinals

Woodward, Okla. — WAGONER - in a back and forth game, unbeaten Wagoner edged the Woodward Boomers 28-21 at Odom Field Friday in the Class 4A football quarterfinals.

Lawrence Evitt's 21-yard touchdown run with around 6 minutes remaining provided the winning score for the Bulldogs.

The Boomers were unable to answer that touchdown and saw their season end at 8-4. The state quarterfinal appearance was the Boomers second in three years. The eight wins were the most by a Boomer team since the 1996 club went 8-5.

Wagoner struck first as Evitt broke a 64-yard touchdown run just a couple of minutes into the game.

Kyler Ferguson tied it with a 2-yard run early in the second period.

Wagoner went up 14-7 on a 4-yard run by Roman Rodriguez and kick by Tanner Rolen.

Again the Boomers came back as Kale Hixon hit Kaleb Roach with a  7-yard touchdown pass just 7 seconds before halftime. Jason Alexander's kick evened the game 14-14 at the break.

Wagoner again scored first in the third quarter on a 5-yard by Evitt.

The Boomers evened things up later in the quarter on Dakota Taylor's 10-yard run.

Wagoner, 12-0, will face Anadarko, also 12-0 in the semifinals next week.
