Sooners dominant in week 1

Oklahoma emerged from its cocoon Saturday night as a completely different team from 2012. The 34-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe came in ways Sooner teams haven’t won in years.

Defense dominated the night. The maligned unit from 2012 pitched its first shutout since 2011.

The debut of redshirt freshman quarterback Trevor Knight got off the a shaky start and he put up nothing close to the gaudy passing numbers the Sooners have grown accustomed to (11-for-28 for 86 yards). But he did throw three touchdowns passes and delivered the promised athletic goods. Knight rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries.

The 16th-ranked Sooners rushed for 305 yards as a team with running back Damien Williams adding 66 on 16 carries.

Louisiana-Monroe quarterback Kolton Browning, who was the 2012 Sun Belt Conference offensive player of the year, had the rough night. He completed 20 of 39 passes for 128 yards.

The Warhawks, who beat Arkansas and took Auburn and Baylor down to the wire last season, only had nine first downs Saturday.
