Shinn at 3 p.m.: Record crowd expected for Cotton Bowl

NORMAN — Oklahoma and Texas A&M will meet in the AT&T Cotton Bowl in less than three weeks.

The excitement for the game has been high. Both schools sold out their ticket allotments in less than day.

The Cotton Bowl had no problem selling out the rest of the seats in 80,000-seat Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“I’ve been at Cotton Bowl over 20 years now and this looks to be by far the toughest ticket we’ve had in all the years I’ve been here,” said Rick Baker, Cotton Bowl President/CEO, on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday. “We’re gonna have a crowd somewhere between 85,000 and 90,000, which will make in the second-highest attended game in our 77-year history. Obviously, there’s a lot of excitement about the matchup and this game.”

Cowboys Stadium can house up to 10,000 more fans than capacity because it has standing room areas in both end zones.

If the Jan. 4 meeting between the Sooners and the Aggies meets Baker’s expectation, it will be a record Cotton Bowl crowd for games at Cowboys Stadium. The game moved there in 2010.

The current attendance record for the game is 88,175. That was set with the 2009 game between Ole Miss and Texas Tech at the actual Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
