Boomers to face Eagles

Woodward, Okla. — Woodward takes its undefeated record to Weatherford tonight to face the Eagles for the second time in a week.

The Boomers, 7-0 and ranked 13th in Class 4A, defeated the Eagles 59-46 in the semifinals of the MidFirst Classic last week on their way to a tournament championship.

After beating Heritage Hall 55-35 in the finals on Saturday, the Boomers are off to their best start in recent memory.

A veteran team, the Boomers are entering a big week with the game at Weatherford followed by a matchup at second-ranked Anadarko on Friday. That game could end up deciding the Western Conference championship and it may also be a regional or area tournament preview.

On the girls side, the Boomers take a 2-game winning streak into a tough stretch as both Weatherford and Anadarko are ranked in the top 5 in Class 4A. Weatherford won the MidFirst Classic and Andarko its own invitational last week.

The Weatherford game was originally scheduled in December, then postponed due to winter weather.

The area schedule tonight includes Hammon at Arnett, Seiling at Fairview, Forgan at Fargo-Gage (the game is in Gage), Fort Supply at Laverne, Canton at Leedey, Mooreland at Aline-Cleo, Vici at Sharon-Mutual and Cherokee at Waynoka.

The Hammon-Arnett girls game features the top 5 Lady Warriors against an Arnett team on a 7-game winning streak. Arnett is 12-4 and won the Merritt Tournament over the weekend. Hammon has a 10-5 record and finished third in the Hinton Tournament. Two of the Warriors 5 losses have been to Class A No.1-ranked Cheyenne.

The Seiling-Fairview girls game also offers a traditional matchup between perennial state tournament contenders. Seiling is ranked 9th in Class A and Fairview is third in Class 2A.

The Vici girls vs. Sharon-Mutual is another key matchup between top 20 teams. Vici finished third in the Seiling Tournament while Sharon-Mutual was runner-up in the Oil Center Classic at Woodward.

On the boys side, Fort Supply puts a 3-game winning streak up against Class A power Laverne.

Game time everywhere is 6:30 p.m. with the boys playing first.

Looking ahead: One of the top boys matchups in Class B will take place in Arnett on Friday with defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Arnett hosting No. 2 Forgan, the state champion in 2011 and 2012. There will also be a couple of top-flight girls games with Seiling visiting Sharon-Mutual and Vici going to Thomas.

Pairings have been announced for the Newcastle Tournament Jan. 23-25.

The Woodward boys will open against Bethel at 5:40 p.m. Thursday. On Woodward’s side of the bracket are Newcastle and Classen. Ada heads the top half of the bracket

Woodward’s girls will open against the host Racers at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Yukon and Noble are also in the Boomers side of the bracket.

The Boomer wrestlers return to the mat tonight in their home opener against Liberal, Kan. and it will also be Senior Night for the Boomers.

The Senior Night activities should start around 6 p.m. with the dual match following. Liberal is typically a pretty competitive squad in western Kansas.

This marks the start of a busy stretch for the Boomers as they go to Kingfisher on Friday and Saturday for the Western Conference Tournament, then next Thursday head to Elk City for the 4A-1 District Duals, which will determine the district's representative for Dual State.

The Boomers close out the month with home matches against Altus and Enid on Jan. 28, then the Hub City Tournament in Clinton on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
