Boomers win district championship

Woodward, Okla. — ELK CITY - The Boomers put together one of their best games of the season in routing the Elks 65-39 to win a district championship Saturday at the Pioneer Center.

With the win, the Boomers 11-11, move into the regional semifinals where they face John Marshall, a 60-34 winner over Bridge Creek in its district. The semifinal is set for 8 p.m. on Thursday at John Marshall High School.

The news wasn't as good for the Woodward girls as they never got untracked in a 47-38 loss to Elk City. The Boomers, 5-17, will take on John Marshall in a 1:30 p.m. elimination game on Thursday at John Marshall. The Bears lost to Bridge Creek 60-39 in the district round.

The Boomers lost a close game to Elk City early in the season, but made sure the rematch wouldn't come down to the last minute.

In the girls game, Hillary Hurst led Woodward with 13 points. Amanda Covalt scored 8 and Kameron Pope 7.
