Woodward, Okla. —
After disappointing losses on the road last week, the Boomers will try and close out the December portion of the basketball season on a positive note tonight.
They will try and do it against a rugged opponent in Class 6A Enid at Boomer Fieldhouse.
Varsity girls action starts at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys at approximately 8 p.m.
Woodward's girls are off to a 1-7 start and lost 52-49 in overtime at Elk City last week after leading most of the game. Enid comes into the contest a 5-1 with the only loss to Lawton MacArthur in the semifinals of the Altus Tournament.
The Pacers are ranked 14th in Class 6A.
A year ago, Enid won both games, 56-51 and 51-39.
Woodward's boys also lost a tough one at Elk City as the Elks hit a shot at the buzzer for a 50-48 win.
It was an uphill battle most of the night for the Boomers, but they rallied to tie the game late only to fall victim to the Elks' last second heroics.
Woodward comes into the game 3-5 with all of the losses by 8 points or fewer.
Enid is 2-4 on the season after losing games to Lawton Eisenhower and Lawton High over the weekend. The Plainsmen hold wins over Muskogee and Sapulpa.
A year ago, each team won on the other's home floor with Enid taking a 53-41 decision at Boomer Fieldhouse and the Boomers winning 49-34 in Enid.
A few area games are on the schedule tonight, though several teams wrapped up their pre-holiday action last week.
The slate includes Gage at Arnett (girls only), Forgan at Balko, Beaver at Follett, Canton at Buffalo, Fairview at Watonga, Hammon at Fort Supply, Leedey at Vici, Okeene at Waukomis and Sharon-Mutual at Shattuck.
While a little light, there are some interesting contests on the schedule.
The Balko girls should face a challenge from Beaver County rival Forgan. Two of the Panhandle's top players are featured in Jaylee Mays of Balko and Kenzi Taylor of Forgan.
The Sharon-Mutual girls game at Shattuck could be a good one as well. Sharon-Mutual beat Seiling on Monday. Another to watch is Leedey at Vici. Leedey is ranked 10th and Vici 11th in Class B. Vici is coming off a win over Seiling.
In 9th grade games on Monday, the Boomers defeated Liberal, Kan. twice.
Woodward 45, Liberal 17
Harmon 12, Diercks 10, Newby 9, Whitworth 4, Mora 4, Steadman 2, Hayes 2, Haskins 2
