Travelers split with Asher

Woodward, Okla. — SHAWNEE – The Traveler Majors split a pair of games against the Asher Braves here Tuesday.

After dropping the opener 4-0, the Travelers edged Asher 3-2 in the second game.

Francisco Alvarez was the winning pitcher in the nightcap and also homered and drove in a pair of runs, including the game-winner in the fourth inning.

Giles Fox worked the first 3 innings, then Alvarez pitched the middle 2 frames and Leno Ramirez closed for the save, getting a key strikeout with 2 runners in scoring position in the sixth. He retired the side in order in the seventh.

Alvarez led off the game with a homer and Asher tied it in the bottom half.

in the third, Ramirez singled and scored on a Korey Floyd single but again Asher tied the game in the bottom half.

Then in the fourth, Dakota Woods hit a 2-out single and stole second base. Alvarez followed with an RBI single for a 3-2 lead that held up.

The Travelers didn't threaten in the final 3 innings.

In the opener, the Travelers lost 4-0 to the Braves

Woodward had 4 hits in the game and left 8 runners on base, 4 in scoring position.

Dustin Cook started and took the loss. Garrett Collins and Ramirez threw in relief.

Asher scored twice in the first inning and once the third and fifth frames.

Woodward had runners in every inning but couldn't get a key hit.

Alvarez and Harley Herring had doubles to pace the offense.

Woodward faces Pueblo, Colo., today at 3:15 p.m. in the South Plains Classic at Rose State College.
