Travelers win 2 more

Woodward, Okla. — OKLAHOMA CITY – The Travelers are hitting a hot streak.

Woodward stretched its winning streak to 4 games with a pair of victories in the Justin Sullivan Memorial Tournament on Friday.

Woodward edged the Davy Jones Rangers 1-0 and routed the Midwest Blacksox 10-4 to win its pool with a 3-0 mark.

Bracket play starts Saturday at various sites around the Oklahoma City area.

Against the Rangers, Holden Lyons went 6 innings for the win in his first start with the Travelers. Lyons struck out 9 and walked 2. Leno Ramirez pitched the 7th, retiring all 3 batters he faced to collect the save.

Neither team scored until the Travelers broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Korey Floyd led off with a walk and stole second base. Two outs later he scored on a single by Garret Collins.

The Travelers had some other opportunities but stranded runners in scoring position the first 2 innings.

Collins had 3 hits in the game and Francisco Alvarez 2.

The second game was close until the bottom of the fifth inning when Ramirez belted a grand slam homer to highlight a 6-run outburst. Woodward added 2 more runs in the sixth.

Chase Wilson got the win, pitching 5 innings. Collins threw the final 2 frames.

Woodward led just 2-1 going into the fifth when Dakota Woods and Zach Fowler both singled. Alvarez was safe on a bunt to load the bases. Hits by Cullen Mack and Floyd made it 4-1, then Ramirez belted his second home run of the season for an 8-1 lead. Woodward added 2 more in the sixth as Alvarez doubled, Mack and Floyd singled and Dalton Reed hit a sacrifice fly.
