Boomers face Star Spencer in Enid on Thursday

Woodward, Okla. — Ninth-ranked Woodward turned away Blackwell's upset bid to post a 57-46 victory in the 4A District 1 basketball championship at Boomer Fieldhouse Saturday night.

Woodward outscored Blackwell 12-2 in the final 5:26 of the game to get its 19th victory of the year against 2 losses. Blackwell fell to 15-8.

The Boomers will face Star Spencer on Thursday in the regional semifinals at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center in Enid. Game time is 8 p.m. Blackwell plays Weatherford at 3 p.m.

In the girls final, Blackwell got 23 points from Ireya Calderon and downed the Boomers 47-35. Blackwell faces second ranked Weatherford on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and the Boomers, 5-16, play Star Spencer at 1:30 p.m.

Woodward's boys seemed in control of Blackwell early, but was unable to pull away and the Maroons closed to within six points, 25-19 at halftime.

The Maroons gained momentum in the third period and took a 4-point lead at one time.

The Boomers trailed 43-41 entering the fourth quarter.

In the final eight minutes, the Boomers regained control of the game, holding Blackwell without a field goal.

Ty Richey's two free throws, then layup after a turnover put the Boomers back in front 45-43. A free throw cut the lead to one, but after that it was all Boomers.

Taylan Iliff hit two free throws, then Kaleb Roach converted a 3-point play and added another free throw for a 51-44 lead. Trey Hubbard hit a pair of free throws for Blackwell with 2:02 left, but the Boomers scored the game's last 6 points for the 57-46 final.

Richey led Woodward with 15points and Iliff had 14. Hubbard paced Blackwell with 18 points.

Woodward's girls jumped out to an early 8-3 lead but couldn't hold it as Blackwell ran off 14 points in a row to go up 17-8.The Boomers still trailed by 9 early in the third period but scored 6 straight points to close the gap to 23-20.

The Boomers were unable to get closer than 3 points in the fourth period and Blackwell sealed the win with a 10-0 run to make it 39-25 with around 2 minutes left.

Hillary Hurst had 16 points and Kameron Pope 11 for the Boomers.

In Class A action at Seiling, the host Wildcats swept the regional finals and moved within a game of the state tournament.

Seiling's girls defeated Vici 41-30 and the boys routed Laverne 80-50.

Vici and Laverne also move on to the area in Weatherford.

In the consolation finals, Arapaho-Butler girls and Beaver boys earned trips to area, eliminating Fargo-Gage and Mooreland, respectively. Beaver beat Mooreland in an overtime thriller.

In the Class B regional at Leedey, the Lomega girls beat Leedey 70-46 and the Okeene boys downed Dover 51-46 to win regional titles. All four teams move on to the area this week in Woodward.

In consolation games, Okeene's girls advanced with a 40-27 win over Sharon-Mutual and the Leedey boys eliminated Fort Supply 61-32.
