Woodward, Okla. — The 15th-ranked Boomer basketball team opened a big lead then held off an Enid rally for a 55-51 victory at Boomer Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.
Woodward improved to 2-0 with one more game left before the holiday break - at home against Elk City next Tuesday. Enid is 0-2.
Taylan Iliff led a balanced Woodward offense with 14 points, Kaleb Roach scored 13, Ty Richey 10 and Garrett Owen 9.
The Boomers built a double digit lead in the first half, but Enid closed to within 2 points twice in the fourth period, the last time at 51-49 with 28.1 seconds left.
Richey and Kale Hixon each hit a pair of free throws in the final 23 seconds to seal the win.
In the girls game, Enid improved to 2-0 with a 53-45 win over the Boomers.
The game was competitive throughout and the Boomers led 24-20 early in the second half before Enid came back to open a 38-31 lead after three quarters.
Hillary Hurst led the Boomers with 12 points and Amanda Covalt scored 10. Kameron Pope and Lauren Garner had 9 points each.
