Travelers edge Pueblo, 3-2

Woodward, Okla. — MIDWEST CITY - Woodward opened action in the South Plains Classic with a 3-2 win over Pueblo, Colo., at Rose State College Wednesday night.

Francisco Alvarez doubled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning, then Leno Ramirez worked out of a jam in the seventh as the Travelers continued to shine in this tournament.

Over the past 3 years, the Travelers are 14-3 in the South Plains Classic with 2 runner-up finishes.

Woodward faces the Southwest Shockers at 1 p.m. and Bethany at 5:30 p.m. today at Midwest City High School.

Kyle Stevens went 6 innings for the win, escaping a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the sixth with a strikeout and pop fly.

In the bottom half, Harley Herring and Dalton Reed reached on errors and with 2 out, Alvarez blasted a double to score Herring.

In the seventh, Pueblo got a runner on third base with 2 outs but Ramirez closed out the game for a save.

Pueblo led 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth when the Travelers scored twice as Cullen Mack walked and Reed reached on an error. Mack scored on an error before Dakota Woods singled home Reed to tie the game.
