Minors win tournament thriller

Woodward, Okla. — Clay Teel’s 2-out single scored Gunner Garrison with the winning run as the Traveler Minors edged Dodge City, Kan., 5-4 in 8 innings Thursday.

It was the first game of the Fourth of July Festival for the Minors and they struggled to score early, twice having the bases loaded only to see Dodge City turn double plays.

Down 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Minors quickly got even as Teel singled and Garrett Hines lofted a 2-run homer to left field.

After holding Dodge City in the eighth, the Travelers got a leadoff walk from Garrison. Gage Owen bunted Garrison to second base and he moved to third on a ground out.

Teel ripped a line drive to center field that eluded the diving outfielder and Garrison crossed with the winning run.

The Traveler Majors won 9-1 over Pratt, Kan. on Thursday afternoon and improved to 2-0 in the tournament.

Dalton Reed pitched 5 innings for the win with Cullen Mack throwing the sixth frame.

Reed struck out 7 and scattered 5 hits.

Woodward led from the start, scoring 2 runs in the first inning and 3 in the third to take command of the game.

Francisco Alvarez and Leno Ramirez each scored 3 times. Garret Collins and Zach Fowler each drove in a pair of runs.

The Minors played the Enid Minors late on Thursday.

Due to a couple of late cancellations, the Travelers will field a split squad team as well in the tournament and the schedule has been shuffled.

For Friday at Fuller Park, the schedule now has Weatherford vs. SW Shockers Black at 12:30 p.m., the OC Drillers vs. Woodward split squad at 3 p.m., the Traveler Minors vs. SW Shockers Black at 5:30 p.m. and the Traveler Majors vs. SW Shockers Grey at 8 p.m.

At the 5-plex, Dodge City faces the Enid Minors at 12:30 p.m., Bethany takes on the Enid Minors at 3 p.m. and Perryton plays the Woodward split squad at 5:30 p.m.
