WHS girls stun Newcastle

Woodward, Okla. — NEWCASTLE - Woodward's girls turned in their best performance of the season here Thursday night and the result was a 52-46 upset of 15th-ranked Newcastle.

In the boys game, Woodward routed Bethel 63-43.

Hillary Hurst scored 23 points and Shelbi Smithton 15 to fuel the win, certainly the most significant for the program in a while.

The Boomers improved to 3-8, building a 32-22 halftime and holding off a late surge by the Racers, who fell to 10-3.

Kameron Pope added 11 points for the Boomers and Amanda Covalt scored three.

Woodward will face its fifth consecutive ranked team in the tourney semifinals tonight as they take on Class 6A No. 9 Yukon at 7 p.m.

On the boys side, the 11th ranked Boomers are 10-1 after a solid win over Bethel.

The Boomers controlled the game and led 31-16 at halftime. Bethel closed the gap to 11 after three quarters before the Boomers pulled away again late.

Woodward will face Newcastle in the 8:20 p.m. semifinals.

Taylan Iliff led the Boomers with 20 points and Ty Richey was also in double figures with 16.

Other scoring had Garrett Owen and Jason Alexander with 6 each, Slade Roach with 5, Kale Hixon and Kaleb Roach with 4 reach and Austin Ludwyck scored 2.

Simmons had 17 to pace Bethel.

In action from the Buffalo Tournament on Thursday the girls teams from Forgan, Beaver, Shattuck and Vici posted wins as did the boys teams from Forgan, Beaver and Shattuck. Laverne defeated Buffalo in the late game.
