Boomer wrestler advances to state meet

Woodward, Okla. — Woodward junior Kyler Ferguson finished third in the Class 4A regional tournament at Weatherford on Saturday to qualify for the state wrestling championships.

Ferguson, 23-9, defeated Trevor Hubble of Cushing 5-2 in the third place match at 195 pounds.

The only match Ferguson lost in the regional was to eventual champion Jacob Hoffman of Weatherford in the semifinals.

He bounced back to win in the consolation semifinals, wrapping up a state berth, then went on to take the third place match.

Ferguson will wrestle Jason He, a senior from Miami who was second in the eastern regional, on Friday at the State Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City.

Other first-round matches at 195 pounds have Hoffman vs. Brad Rowan of Bristow, unbeaten Jaden Daveport of Sallisaw against Hubble and Gabe Sanchez of Poteau against Wesley Boatman of Tuttle.

Trevyn Delong of Woodward also reached the semifinals but didn't advance to state.

The Boomers finished 11th in the team standings with 55 points.

Tuttle won the regional with Cushing second.

The first session of the state tournament will start at 10:30 a.m.
