Boomers beat Clinton twice

Woodward News

Woodward, Okla. — Saturday night was a roller coaster ride for the Boomer girls basketball team.

Woodward built a 17-point lead, lost it in the third period, then came back to eventually beat Clinton 65-55 in overtime at Boomer Fieldhouse for a sweep of the Lady Reds this season.

In the boys game, the Boomers scored the game's first 16 points and routed Clinton 62-28, raising their record to 9-10.

The Boomers dominated the girls game for a half, building up a 27-14 lead. That went away quickly in the third period underneath a 26-point barrage by Clinton led by Abbie Reynolds.

Down 4 points going into the final 8 minutes, the Boomers rallied and appeared to have the game in hand until Clinton's Haley Adams hit a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left to force overtime.

The extra period was all Boomers.

Kameron Pope opened the overtime with a 3-pointer and the Boomers scored the first 8 points.

Haylee Bates hit 3 of 4 free throws around an 8-foot jumper by Merceedez Bell.

Clinton scored just 2 points in the overtime.

Bates led a balanced Boomer offense with 17 points. Amanda Covalt and Bell each had 12 and Hillary Hurts scored 10.

Reynolds led Clinton with 18 points and Lacy Williams scored 14.

The Boomers improved to 4-15 on the season.

Clinton's boys have won just one game - ironically the season opener - all season and the Boomers made sure the Tornadoes didn't have an opportunity in this one.

The Boomers led 16-0 before Clinton got on the board and had a 36-9 advantage at halftime on the way to a 62-28 final.

Taylan Iliff had 20 points and Ty Richey 13 for the Boomers, who used their bench extensively throughout the second half.

The Boomers have their final road game of the regular season on Tuesday at Altus, then host Elgin on Friday and Elk City the following Tuesday.
