Woodward, Okla. —
Woodward rolled up 334 yards rushing and nearly 480 yards in total offense to defeat Cache 38-28 in District 4A-1 football action at Boomer Stadium on Thursday.
Woodward moved a step closer to securing a playoff berth and is in sole possession of 4th place in the district as Piedmont and Elgin both lost on Thursday. Woodward is 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the district.
The Boomers also celebrated Senior Night with the win and in the process broke a 6-game home losing streak.
Jake Hughes and Kaleb Roach connected on touchdown passes of 38 and 15 yards, and Kyler Ferguson had scoring runs of 34 and 24 yards to pace the Boomers. Xavier Vo ran for 152 yards on 18 carries and had the Boomers other score on a 6-yard run. Jesus Munoz added a 34-yard field goal.
Cache stayed close with several big plays and cut Woodward’s lead from 38-14 to 38-28 in the fourth period.
The Boomers were able to turn away the late rally and actually threatened to tack on another touchdown in the final minute
The Boomers scored on the first and last possessions of the opening half as Hughes hit Roach for a 38-yard score early and Vo scored late. In between came the Munoz field goal.
In the second half, the Boomers got a 38-yard punt return from Jason Alexander that set up Ferguson’s 34-yard touchdown run.
Cache countered with a long scoring drive, but Roach caught a 15-yard pass from Hughes and after a punt, the Boomers went 61 yards in 8 plays to take their biggest lead at 38-14. Vo started the drive with a 24-yard run and Ferguson finished it with his second score.
In other 4A-1 games on Thursday, Anadarko defeated Piedmont and Weatherford beat Elgin. Clinton and Elk City play on Friday night.
