Boomers dispatch Elgin 35-0 for 4th straight win

Woodward, Okla. — Head coach Darris Servis had plenty of reasons to smile after the Boomers defeated Elgin 35-0 at Boomer Stadium Friday night.

Simply put, the Boomers put on their second consecutive dominating performance on both sides of the ball in winning their fourth straight game, improving to 5-1 on the season and more important, 3-0 in District 4A-1.

"The kids did a pretty good job," Servis said. "Things are clicking pretty good right now."

Any worries of possible focus issues on the Boomers' part coming off a big win at Weatherford and with a even bigger game at Anadarko looming, went away early,

Woodward scored on its first 3 possessions of the game, forced a couple of first half turnovers and was never threatened.

"This is a good group, an intelligent group," Servis said. "They knew what was at stake in this game."

Micah Kee scored three touchdowns for the Boomers and Dakota Taylor and Kaleb Roach had one touchdown each.

The win puts the Boomers in position to face unbeaten Anadarko for first place in the district next week. Anadarko went on the road and beat Clinton 35-7 on Friday.

Elgin dropped to 1-2 in the district and 2-4 overall.

Woodward took control of things early with a 15-play 84-yard touchdown drove on the initial possession of the game, converting four times on third down.

A 15-yard pass from Kale Hixon to Kade Marlatt got the drove going, then Hixon and Xavier Vo had big runs.

On third and 8 from the Elgin 29, Hixon found Kee for 9 yards and a first down. Three plays later, on a third and 7 from the 19, Hixon scrambled and hit Roach in the end zone for the score. Jason Alexander added the extra point.

Elgin then gambled on a fourth and one from its own 29 and came up empty, setting the Boomers up on the Owl 28.

Three plays later Taylor busted through for a 19-yard touchdown and it was 14-0.

Quarterback Jonathan Christensen led the Owls on a nice drive to a first down at the Boomer 15. But on the next play, Lane Reazin stepped in front of a pass near the goal line and returned the interception to the Owl 33.

It took the Boomers 6 plays to score. Kee got the touchdown, taking a short pass from Hixon, picking up a block from Roach and sprinting 22 yards to the end zone for a 21-0 lead.

Elgin reached the Boomer 24 on its next possession before Taylor sacked Christensen and forced a fumble the Boomers recovered.

That was the last threat by anyone in the first half.

The Boomers got another turnover early in the second half when Reazin recovered a loose ball at the Elgin 34.

Kee scored on the next play to make it 28-0.

Kee's 49-yard touchdown later in the third period ended the scoring as the Boomers posted their second consecutive shutout.

Woodward's game with Anadarko next week kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
