Boomers edge Elks in I-40 Classic

Woodward, Okla. — CLINTON - Woodward finished play in the I-40 Baseball Classic with a 3-0 win over Elk City Saturday morning.

Francisco Alvarez tossed his third shutout of the season and struck out 16. He allowed just 2 hits and walked 5.

Woodward pieced together runs in the first, third and fourth innings.

Garrett Hines ripped a 2-out double in the first inning and scored on a single by Troy Reddoch to give the Boomers a 1-0 lead.

In the second, the Boomers made it 2-0 as Kade Marlatt singled and later scored an error.

The final run came in the fourth inning when Marlatt was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on another error.

The Boomers had other chances, leaving 2 runners on in the third inning and then bases loaded in the sixth.

Lane Reazin had a triple in the seventh inning but was stranded.

Alvarez was in control most of the way, striking out a batter in every inning and striking out the side in the fourth and sixth frames.

Elk City put runners on second and third with one out in the fourth before a pair of strikeouts ended thinning.

In the seventh, the Elks advanced a runner to third but he was erased at home plate.

Earlier in the tournament, the Boomers lost 4-0 to Sayre and defeated Cordell 5-3. A four-run sixth inning sparked the Boomers past Cordell as Garrett Hines singled, Alvarez doubled, Kyler Ferguson tripled and Reddoch homered. Ferguson was the winning pitcher.
