ENID – Both Woodward teams moved on to the Class 4A Area 1 basketball tournament with victories here Saturday afternoon.
Woodward’s girls won their third straight game, routing John Marshall 46-28, and the boys beat Blackwell for the second time in a week, 50-39.
Woodward will play in Stillwater on Thursday with the girls at 6:30 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m. The girls face Berryhill and the boys Oologah.
Hillary Hurst followed up a 29-point effort against Seminole on Friday with 33 points against the John Marshall defense.
Woodard led from the start, taking command with an 11-0 run to start the second period. The lead was double figures for almost all the second half.
Amanda Covalt added 6 points for Woodward. Devre Newby and Kaity Shoaf had 3 each and Lauren Garner 1.
Woodward’s boys used a 7-0 run early in the third period to get some working room against Blackwell and went on to record the 50-39 win and to earn their first area trip since qualifying for state in 2011.
The Boomers turned a 24-18 halftime lead into a 37-26 advantage after three quarters and the closest Blackwell got in the final 8 minutes was 4 points.
Ty Richey and Kaleb Roach led a balanced offense with 13 points each and Taylan Iliff scored 11. Kale Hixon added 9 points and Garrett Owen 4.
Woodward is 21-3 on the season.
Note: Woodward’s girls also learned that they are the academic state champions in Class 4A with their 3.914 grade point average. They will receive the award during the state finals on March 15.
